Background
Getting around a local area can be difficult when transportation options are expensive, limited, or not flexible enough for everyday needs. While working in the transportation sector, the client noticed this gap and saw an opportunity to build a more accessible local ride-sharing service, especially for students, workers, seniors, and the general public as users.
That idea led to the creation of Scoot, a ride-sharing and car-pooling platform designed for communities across Ontario’s Niagara region. The focus was on making everyday transportation easier to access while creating a digital connection between riders and drivers.
The concept was simple: give people a convenient way to arrange rides and give local drivers a platform to provide those rides.
As the idea took shape, it became clear that the business needed more than a basic booking application. The platform had to support different types of riders, drivers, vehicle categories, and operational requirements while keeping the experience simple for everyday users.
That was where Trioangle came in. Our development team worked on turning the concept into a functional digital platform that could support Scoot’s intended ridesharing model.
Let’s Discuss the Challenges
Building Scoot was not just about adding a ride-booking feature. The platform had to work well for both riders and drivers. Riders needed an easy way to find and pre-book a ride. Drivers needed a simple way to receive ride requests, manage their trips, and keep track of their activity.
Scoot also wanted to offer three ride options. Each option had different passenger and vehicle requirements, so the booking flow had to remain simple while handling these differences.
The service was also planned for several locations. This meant the platform had to support rides in different areas while giving Scoot a way to manage its local operations.
There were also several other requirements, including location-based services, driver activity, ride management, and business-side controls.
The main task was to build these features around Scoot’s way of running its ridesharing service. The goal was not to create another standard taxi-booking app, but a platform that matched the way Scoot wanted to operate.
So, What’s the Goal of the Project?
The objective was to build a “Ride-sharing and car-pooling platform serving communities across Ontario’s Niagara region”.
The platform needed to connect riders and drivers through a simple digital experience while providing the technology required to manage different ride options and day-to-day operations.
The development also needed to support mobile users across Android and iOS, along with the web-based requirements of the business.
What was the Process with Trioangle?
He collaborated with us and focused on stable and core features like,
- Ride matching: Connects riders with available cars and drivers with just a 30-second response time.
- Pre-booking: Allows users to arrange rides in advance.
- Multiple ride categories: Supports standard, larger-group, and premium rides.
- Driver statistics: Provides real-time information through the driver app.
- Multi-city operation: Supports service across several locations in the Niagara region.
- Mobile access: The Scoot app is available for both iOS and Android users.
- Business services: Scoot also provides services for businesses covering rides, meals, and delivery requirements.
For his taxi business. Safety and local compliance also form part of the service. So, we took Scoot’s driver and vehicle requirements into account when developing the platform. The system was built to support its process of working with pre-vetted drivers and safety-checked vehicles while connecting drivers and riders through one platform.
The Immaculate Solution
The resulting platform connects riders and drivers through a dedicated ridesharing and carpooling service. We made sure that Scoot acts as an everyday transportation solution for students, workers, and the wider public.
Riders can request rides through the app, while the platform can match them with a car and driver. Scoot also supports pre-booking, allowing users to arrange a ride ahead of time.
On the driver side, the platform provides access to ride-related information and real-time statistics. These statistics help drivers understand their activity and manage their rides through the app.
The platform supports three main ride categories:
- Scoot X: Car rides for up to four people.
- Scoot XL: Van rides for up to seven people.
- Scoot LUX: Premium vehicle rides for up to four people
This gives riders different options based on group size and the type of ride they need.
So, after completing the initial development and submission process, the first Android application went live in July 2022. Scoot TNC then prepared for its official business launch in August, 2022, with the website and application ecosystem being progressively moved into the live environment. Our team continued supporting the platform through the following weeks, including production stabilization, app-store updates, payment configuration, and operational improvements.
Highlights of collaborating with Trioangle
- We delivered a ready-made ridesharing framework to support 30–40% faster development compared with building the platform from scratch.
- The solution brought together 3 core application components, covering rider, driver, and supporting platform requirements.
- The platform supports 3 ride categories like Scoot X, Scoot XL, and Scoot LUX, giving users different options based on their travel needs.
- The initial service model covered 4 service areas across the Niagara region and focuses on other cities like Kitchener, London, and other parts for future availability
- The Scoot XL category supports rides for up to 7 passengers, providing an option for larger groups.
- More than 20 platform customizations were incorporated to align the solution with Scoot’s specific business requirements.
- The platform also included multiple third-party integrations to support areas such as payments, maps, notifications, and other operational requirements.
Business Impact
For Scoot, the project created a digital base for connecting riders and drivers across local communities. Instead of relying on a single ride type or a limited booking model, the platform was designed around different passenger needs, scheduled travel, carpooling, and business-related services.
The project also showed how a ready-made ridesharing framework can be adapted to a regional transportation model. The work combined existing platform components with custom requirements, so the final product reflected Scoot’s intended service structure rather than functioning as a generic ride-booking application.
With 1,000+ users, 50+ drivers, and more than 500 completed rides, the platform has supported everyday transportation by connecting riders and drivers across Scoot’s service areas.
Final Thoughts
Scoot shows how a taxi booking concept can be converted into a multi-platform digital service with the right technical foundation and development approach.
The project brought together passenger applications, driver functionality, and web-based management under one system. With Android, iOS, and Web support, the platform provides multiple access points for the different participants involved in the service.
The project also reflects an important part of ride-hailing development: building around the actual needs of the target market instead of treating every taxi platform as the same. A strong foundation, combined with focused customization, can provide a practical starting point for businesses planning to develop their own taxi booking platform.
